Welcome to Less than 2 Degrees

I am currently setting this site up to be an information resource on Global Warming, and an online version of an email plea I am sending out to my unfortunate friends.

The more I research the subject of Global Warming, the more concerned I become about how dangerous and how immediate the threat is.

Two degrees Celsius is the threshold which scientists (and recently world leaders at the G8 summit) have agreed we must not cross, for fear of triggering climate feedbacks which, once started, will be almost impossible to stop and will drive accelerated warming out of our control.

Climate scientists tell us that once we reach 400 parts per million of CO2 there is a 25% chance of exceeding 2 degrees.

We are very close to that figure (as of May 2009 we are at 390ppm) and we are growing at an accelerating 2.3ppm per year.

Our emissions need to peak in the next five years to have any chance of staying under the 400ppm threshold and none of the current major government commitments are remotely adequate.

The basics are in place now, and over the next few weeks I hope to flesh out the site’s contents. The hope is to provide plainly worded descriptions of the science of global warming, its predicted effects, with links to further information, and some suggestions for actions you can take if you are concerned about it.

Best Regards
