Step One

Help Change Government Policy. About 60 minutes effort.

  1. Sign a Climate Change petition at Getup and follow up any emails they send you on the subject. They have over 110,000 names on file and do a good job of agitating for change. You will get the odd email on other topics, but that’s a small price to pay.
  2. Sign the Greens 5% emission target is not enough petition.
    1. Sign up at one of the international activist groups (there is a good choice). Tcktcktck is trying to rally support for bold cuts in Copenhagen in December, while Stop global warming is running a “Virtual March”.
    2. Email the PM and Penny Wong. A short email via their web sites is all that is needed, though a handwritten letter is even better. This is critical and well worth the few minutes it might take. I attach an example here.
    3. Persuade other people to take action. The quick way to do this is to forward this document to others who you think would do something about it. Alternatively persuade your family and friends directly.
  3. Vote for the Greens, especially in the senate where they are close to holding the balance of power.
  4. Spend a little time learning a bit more about the problem, rather than the latest celebrity diets, babies, drunken misdeeds etc etc. Many of the links in this document are to sites with more information and there are some good books at the end. I will happily provide further information or sources on request.
